Great Granddaughter of James Covington
I do not know where my great-grandfather, James Covington was born, but when I first remembered him, he was living in the neighborhood of Caldonia, near Columbus, Mississippi. He and his wife had two daughters, Sarah and Delitha. Sarah married a prominent brick mason; they had no children. Sarah died at an early age. She was killed with many others in a stampede at the National Baptist Convention in Birmingham, Alabama.
My grandmother, Delitha, married a William Edwards and they had three children: Louberta "Mama Lou," Tennie Amanda and James Dodd.
Louberta married William D. Johnson and they were parents of Nathaniel, William D., Frank Edwards, Delitha and Eliza. William Johnson died some years later and Louberta married a Frierson and they moved to what was known as the Indian Territory. The marriage was very unhappy and so Louberta came back to Mississippi where she lived until her death.
James Nathaniel, her first son married a widow, Mrs. Louisa Oliver. They had three children: James Nathaniel Jr., Louberta and Clara.
James N. Jr. has been married twice, but has no children. He and his wife Maxine, live in Toledo, Ohio.
Louberta married a Mr. Simms of Clarksdale, Mississippi. They had no children. After his death she continued living in Clarksdale.
Clara married Anderson Gray in Clarksdale. They have three children: Valorie, Verna and Anderson Jr.
William D. Johnson (Louberta's second son) was married to Phyllis Smith of Brooksville, Mississippi. They were the parents of three children: Willis, Delitha and Frank Edwards. Delitha died in early childhood. Willis married and he and his wife had two children: Willis Jr. and Delitharee. Willis Sr. died in 1938. His wife and children moved to California.
William D. Johnson was the father of eleven children. Dennis Johnson, his first son lived in Stockton, California until his death in 1983. He was married to Ella and they have five children.
Frank Edwards grew up and married Lillie L. Jones in Greenwood, Mississippi. They had no children. They lived in Toledo, Ohio until their passing.
William D. Johnson's wife, Phyllis, died when Frank was six months old. James Johnson was born. (fourth son of William D.) He married a lady by the name of Lillian in Greensville, Mississippi. they have a daughter Mildred who lives with her mother in California. James and Lillian divorced and he married and divorced again. Later, he married Willie B. and they have two sons James Harold and Frank. Until their deaths in 1989, James and Bea lived in Toledo, Ohio. James Harold is married and lives in Toledo with his children. Frank, also of Toledo, is divorced and is the father of Dorianne J., Reshard D. Gibson, Raun-Frank and James K.
William D. Johnson married again. The girl whom he married was Emma Mae Cavett (Patton). They were the parents of six children. The first, a girl, Everett Will died when she was two years old. The other children are Maggie, Verlie, Delitha, Arlelia, Roosevelt and Elois. Maggie married Willie McCullough, and they had three children: Eddie, Charles and Unennette. Eddie is living in Chicago, Illinois. Charles and his first wife, Barbara, have two children: Brigitte, who lives in Wayne, Michigan, with her son, Kobe Atkins, and Charles Jr., who lives in Arlington, Texas. Unennette has two sons: Christopher and Dimetrius. They live in Chicago, Illinois. Willie passed away in 1975. Maggie remarried to Booker Holman and lived in Chicago, Illinois until her death.
Verlie Delitha, who now lives in Muncie, Indiana, married James McCampbell, and they have three children: Yolanda J., James B. and Carl F. Yolanda and her husband, George Robinson, have two Children: Yolanda Delitha and George Jr., who lives in Toledo with his wife, the former Vandra L. Brown. Yolanda Delitha married Roye Durden, and they have two children: Alana and Alan. All live in Toledo, Ohio. J.B. and his wife, Alyce, have three children: James P., JaDrian and Jakira, who is the mother of Giselle Kalila Campbell. All, except JaDrian, live in Liverpool, NY. JaDrian, who is married to Leroy Whitfield, is enlisted in the U.S. Army and is stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. The Whitfields have one daughter, Sierra Zion, and live in Clarksville, Tennessee. Carl, who lives in Muncie, has one son, TaShombe, and he lives in Toledo.
Arlelia married R.C Rogers and they have three childen: Reginald, the oldest died at one years old; Everett and Yvonne. Everett is divorced and the father of four children: Everett Jr., Michael, who is married to Lisa and is the father of Brandon Michael, Symira and David. Yvonne is married to Walter Brown and they have three children: Tamika, who lives in Dolton, Illinois with Rufus Buckhalter and their son, Jaylen Rufus Buckhalter, Walter II and Autumn. All, except Tamika and her family and Autumn, live in Calumet City, Illinois. Autumn is enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and is stationed at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Ohio.
Roosevelt Johnson was the father of six children: Barbara Jean, the oldest, married Cornelius Addison. They have twin daughters, Karla and Karen. Barbara divorced and later married James Howell. They have no children.
Roosevelt married Ruby L. Walker, and they have five children: Theodore Roosevelt Jr., Climmie B., Shirley Mae, Tommy Edward and Rickey. Until his death, Theodore was married to Rosalyn. They had one son, Theodore III, who passed away in 1987. Climmie B. is married to Kay, and they have two sons: Climmie Jr. and Christin. Climmie Jr. and his wife have one son, Isiah. Until her death, Shirley was married to Leon G. Allen, also deceased. They had one son, Leon Jr. Tommy and his wife, Mari, have one son Tommy Jr. Rickey is the father of one son, Rickey Jr. Roosevelt Sr. died in 1978. His widow, children and grandchildren all live in Toledo, Ohio.
Elois married Cleotha Stewart, and they have four children: Jimmie, Cleotha, Patricia and Chequita.
Jimmie and his first wife, Veta, have one daughter, Tiffany. He has since remarried and is living in Anderson, Indiana, with his wife, Irma. Irma has two sons, David Sanford-Jones Nave and Alan Wesley Nave. Cleotha Jr. is the father of one daughter Tammara Renee. Patricia, before her death on April 13, 2004, married Gary Mason Sr., and they had three children: Christopher, Amicheal Jason and Garnisha. They all live in Muncie, Indiana. Chequita lives and works in Muncie, Indiana and has no children. Tiffany has one daughter, Alexis Anita, and lives in Indianapolis, Indiana.
Julius Frank Johnson married Levanda Macon of Brooksville, Mississippi, and they had six children: Steve L., Flauzelle, James Woodrow, Juluis Frank, Delitha and Essie.
Steve L., the oldest, and his wife, Ida Mae, have eight children: Willard Levanda, Flauzell, Daisy K., Steve (June), James Woodrow, Elizabeth, Bennie Will and Joyce Ann. Willard L. has one son, Brian Kelly Morton. Flauzell made a career in the military. Daisy K. married Lawrence Harris and they have four children: Lawrence, Jr., Darrel, Karen and Dawan. Lawrence, Darrel and family reside in California. Elizabeth has two children: Collette and Carey. Collette has one child, Tamaria. Steve and his five sons lives in Elkhart, Indiana. Bennie and his wife, Tammy, of Richmond, Virginia have two sons: Eric who lives at home and Barry of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. James Woodrow, Willard Levanda , and Joyce Ann live in Elkhart, Indiana.
Flauzell, Julius Frank's second son, died in 1986. His widow, Issie lives in Elkhart.
Juluis Frank, the oldest daughter, married Archie Goodman of Bruce, Mississippi. He established the first High School for Blacks in Calhoun County. Juluis and Archie have four children: Artie, Albert, Eddie Frank and Cathy C. Artie is married to Fulton Caston and they two Daughters: Paulette and Sonya. Albert lives in Tchula, Mississippi. Eddie Frank has five children: Pamela, Effrem, Illicia, Lethea and Levanda. Cathy lives in Jackson, Mississippi.
James Woodrow served four years in the U.S Army. He passed away in 1982. His son, Marshall, lives in Elkhart, Indiana.
Essie married Willie Edwards. They have one son, Willie Frank. Willie Frank married Shirley Watson and they have three children: Marco, Tammy and Pevis. Marco and his wife, Camille Lee, live in Indianapolis. Tammy and her husband, Pevis Dulin, live in Layton, Utah. Teresa lives in Elkhart, Indiana.
Delitha married Harrison Allen. They have four children: Delois Julius Terry, Burdena Willis, Harrison Allen, III. and Weldon Keith. Delois, who lives in Torrance, California, has two children: Ronald Keith and Burdena Monique. Keith has three children: Marquitta, LaQuisha and Weldon Keith, Jr. Marquitta has one son, Cecil McClendon. LaQuisha has one daughter, Miranda. They live in St. Louis, Missouri.
Delitha Edwards' younger daughter, Tennie Amanda, lived in Starkville, Mississippi with her Aunt and Uncle, Frank and Sarah Spruels. Tennie Amanda was a teacher in the public schools. She met Columbus Moody, also a public school teacher. They were later married and had two daughters: Lenora Louise and Virlie Delitha. Louise and Virlie both became teachers in the city and public schools. Louise married Louis Allen, and they moved to Memphis, Tenn. and finally to Toledo, OH.
Virlie was employed by the USDA and spent twenty-two years in the service of the federal government. Later, she returned to Mississippi and married James E. Lindsay of Hansboro, Mississippi. They have one daughter, Alva E.
Alva married Leroy V. Powell, and they had two sons, Leroy V. and Randall A. Alva and Leroy divorced. Later, Alva married George W. Brown. They had one son, George W. Brown Jr. Alva now lives in Toledo, Ohio. Randall is the father of two sons, Justin Allen (Moody) Powell and Sean Allen (Moody) Powell, and they live in California. George lives in Dublin, Ohio.
